Welcome to the Sia Innovate and Integrate Hackathon, an event for developers, innovators, and thinkers passionate about revolutionizing how we store and manage data in the digital age.

What is Sia?

Sia has been at the cutting edge of decentralized storage technology for nearly a decade. Its platform offers a secure, performant, and affordable way to store data on a decentralized cloud. Unlike traditional cloud storage solutions that rely on centralized data centers, Sia leverages peer-to-peer technology to create a distributed and decentralized network. This network comprises many individual nodes, each offering a portion of their unused storage space to the network.

What is renterd?

renterd, developed by the Sia Foundation, is the new Sia rentering software designed for individual users seeking data storage solutions and developers needing a robust API for app development on the Sia network.

The Essence of Decentralized Storage

Decentralized storage marks a significant shift from the centralized data storage model. It aims to enhance data security, reduce reliance on large data centers, and give users greater control over their data. In a decentralized system, data is split into many parts, encrypted, and distributed across a global network, ensuring no single entity has control or access to the complete data set. This approach significantly reduces the risk of data breaches and ensures greater availability of uploaded data.

Benefits of Self-Owned Data Storage

Self-owned data storage empowers users with unparalleled control and privacy over their data. Users can store sensitive information without worrying about unauthorized access or misuse by third-party providers. This self-sovereignty of data is crucial in an era where data privacy and security are paramount.

Hackathon Tracks

This hackathon has two tracks—one for developers and builders, the other for content creators. Entrants may submit to either track.

Track One: Innovate with renterd

Here, your creativity and technical skills will come into play. Develop projects seamlessly integrating with Sia and renterd's integrated S3-compatible gateway, such as a data backup solution, media hosting platform, or collaboration Tool. We seek solutions demonstrating innovation and usability while understanding the challenges and advantages of decentralized storage.

Track Two: Content Creation

Your challenge is to produce informative and accurate content that simplifies the complexities of renterd's S3 integration. Whether through articles or videos, your content should guide users in leveraging renterd for their projects. Clarity, completeness, technical accuracy, and relevance are the judging criteria.

Requirements

What to Build

1. Development Track (Track One): Build a working software application using renterd's S3-compatible gateway.

2. Content Track (Track Two): Produce educational content outlining an innovative usage of Sia’s S3-compatible gateway.

What to Submit

Submissions to the Hackathon must meet the following requirements:

Development Track:
  • Include a project built with the required developer tools to meet the above requirements.
  • Include a text description that should explain the features and functionality of your Project.
  • Include a demonstration video of your Project. The video portion of the submission:
    • should be less than three (3) minutes
    • should include footage that shows the Project functioning on the device for which it was built
    • must be uploaded to and made publicly visible on YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook Video, or Youku, and a link to the video must be provided on the submission form on the Hackathon Website; and
    • must not include third-party trademarks, copyrighted music, or other material unless the Entrant has permission to use such material.
    • URL to a functional demo application OR URL to a public code repository
Content Track:
  • Provide a URL to an original piece of content outlining an innovative usage of our S3 gateway.
  • Educational content can be any length, may take written or video form, and can include elements like tutorials or personal narratives.
  • The educational content must be publicly available on YouTube, a reputable blog platform, or a personal site.
  • Submit your content by selecting the Content Track on your Devpost submission form before (the hackathon deadline)

Multiple Submissions: An Entrant may submit more than one Submission. However, each submission must be unique and substantially different from each of the Entrant’s other Submissions, as determined by the Sponsor and Devpost in their sole discretion.

Submission ownership: Each Submission must be the Entrant's original work, be solely owned by the Entrant, and not violate the IP rights of any other person or entity.

Public Distribution: The Entrant may make the Project available to the public via a website or online store, but this is not required.

Language Requirements: All Submission materials must be in English or, if not in English, the Entrant must provide an English translation of the demonstration video, text description, and testing instructions as well as all other materials submitted.
